Anasazi Culture Essay -- Native American Indians

Long before the coming of the so-called "civilized" Europeans, North America was inhabited by traveling bands of ancient people. Nomadic tribes, these early ancestors of Southwest Native Americans traveled the land in search of food from the thriving herds of large animals. But possibly as early as A.D. 900, as the wandering herds began to diminish, these people began to settle down and developed societies and cultures around what is called the Four Corners area of the southwest, in southern Utah and Colorado, and northern Arizona and New Mexico. Referred to as "Hisatsinom" by their Hopi descendants, the people are probably better known as "Anasazi," the Navajo name said to mean "ancient enemies." Other, more traditional, Native Americans may simply refer to these ancient people as the "old ones." Whatever the name, it is evident that these people not only settled in, but were also a thriving population and cultural center for the southwest. The Anasazi, ancestors of present-day Pueblos, Zunis, and Hopis of New Mexico and Arizona, fished, hunted small game and birds, and gathered wild foods in their newly developing home. A desert culture, these ancient people learned to live off the land, and even to make the land work for their good. Eventually building elaborate structures in the cliff walls, the Anasazi moved from their early "subterranean pit houses, sunken homes with stonework walls," into elaborately carved mansions high atop cliff walls and stone structures. As they developed aboveground storage facilities, the Anasazis began to build grand houses into the stones, acquiring new living quarters and using their former underground dwellings as "spiritual centers" called "kivas." The kiva, used for religious tea... ...ur-corners regions of the Southwest. Skeletons, village archeological finds, and cliff and rock art are all that remain to tell us about the heritage and culture of the Southwest. Other evidences abound in the stories of the "old ones," still told around council fires and pow wows. The stories of these earlier people are still told by the elders of different tribes, to teach their young ones their rich cultural heritage. Whatever the reasons for the Anasazi civilization's decline, they were a proud and thriving people, filled with culture, arts, trading and civilization. It is a shame that their once proud homes are but ruins for those of us in this new century to view. Perhaps, one day in the not too distant future, some of our own most spectacular structures and civilizations may lie wasted in the dust, another ancient ruin for some future people to explore.

I completed my degree in Business Studies at the University of Plymouth and spent the summer months travelling Europe with some friends. In the morning, I try to spend some time going to the gym, as I like to keep myself fit and healthy, and also participate with a local football team in the evening. What is a Vessels Chine

In terms of boating, the chine is the area of a vessels hull where the bilge angles up to become the topsides of the hull. The hull is the watertight section of the vessel, above which is the deck and any other superstructure feature. The bilge is the lowest part of a vessel under the waterline.   Hard and Soft Chines A chine is described as being soft or hard depending on the measurement of the internal angle between the bilge to topside transition. A hard chine has a smaller interior angle than a soft chine. There are no absolute values for determining a soft or hard chine construction, but angles less than 135 degrees (90/2)90) are considered hard chines and angles greater than 135 degrees are considered soft chines.  A vessel with a 90-degree angle between bilge and topside has a very hard chine.   Types of Chines Here are a few examples of chine types. A V shape chine is constructed by connecting two flat panels at the bottom-most point of the vessel, creating a V shape. This is also called a single chine hull. While a simple construction, it is not the most stable. A 2 chine hull consists of a flat bottom and 90-degree angled sides on both sides. A hard chine model, a 2 chine hull vessel is very stable and features a large capacity for cargo.   One of the more common chine builds, a 3 chine hull features a very wide V shape extending from the keel. Then, over 90-degreed sides extend up from the  end of the V. Multi-Chine Hulls Multi-chine hulls are vessels 3 or more chines. Modern hulls on high-speed or rough water vessels might have multiple chine hulls. These can be seen on the hull near the bow. Multi-chine hulls allow the cross section of the hull that is exposed to the water to be reduced when the vessel is lifted because of the resistance of water in front of the hull. This is also known as planning hull. As a vessel is lifted, less of the hull contacts the water and it becomes laterally unstable. This instability allows a hull to pivot along its length to stabilize a high-speed turn. Multiple chines are also valuable on larger crafts that operate in rough conditions. The multiple chine hull eases the boat into an oncoming wave more slowly by absorbing the shock, as opposed to a  single flat surface which would transfer all of the wave energy to the hull at one time. Steps of the chine also suppress hull roll and heave by spreading out the impact of waves over a longer period of time.

Chapter notes: Chapter Notes from Journey Into Deaf-World Chapter 1 Chapter one is basically an introduction to the issues that are discussed throughout the book. Chapter one introduces all the people that are constantly referred to throughout the book. Ben Bahan is the narrator and introduces us to Jake Cohan, Laurel Case, Roberto Rivera and Henry Byrne. Ben is a CODA, Child Of Deaf Adults, and like many CODA’s tried to stray from the deaf community be was eventually drawn back to it. He is currently teaching at the only deaf college called Galludet University. Each of these characters describes there lives growing up deaf from when they became deaf, to how their parents reacted, to how they feel about it now. Whether it is through hearing aids, surgery, audiologists, speech therapy, using teachers that are trained in children with disabilities. The child grows up thinking something is wrong with them. Sadly hearing parents don’t realize that Deaf parents raise their Deaf children successfully with out many of these expensive services. A lot of frustration and stress builds because the parents cannot communicate properly with their child. Hearing parents often say that they were never informed of the many options that Deaf parents in the Deaf-World use with their child. Such as early use of ASL, hiring Deaf baby-sitters and day caretakers. Having spent months on an emotional roller coaster some parents refuse to accept the diagnosis that their child is Deaf. They are in denial that may last for years. Some go so far as placing their Deaf child (whom they view as just having a hearing-impairment) in programs designed for hearing children who have disabilities. This delays the start of effective educational programming and the Deaf child’s academic achievement is likely to reflect the delay. Many young Deaf children cling to their hearing mothers excessively. There is almost no meaningful communication.
